VIDEO Series: Inclusion + Innovation: Leveraging Diversity to Generate Business Growth | CEB

Chuck Mitchell explains in this CEB Insight Minute.

This video showcases how cultivating an inclusive culture that actively encourages people to express their unique perspectives so as to become an organization where “diversity of thought” consistently sparks innovation.

In today’s challenging and complex business environment, a company’s ability to innovate can be the difference between mere survival and success. Companies that innovate are the ones that will continue to grow. So, how does an organization create a culture of innovation that will keep it flourishing? By having as inclusive a culture as possible, because research indicates that diversity of thought is the spark that ignites innovation.

It is now widely accepted that diverse groups generate more innovative ideas than homogenous ones. But diversity alone is meaningless without an inclusive culture that values and actively encourages diversity of thought. New research shows that senior leadership is the biggest enabler of innovation and that diversity of thought is the spark that ignites it. Therefore, it is crucial for CEOs and chief strategy officers to champion an inclusive culture.

Building a diverse workforce is one thing; cultivating an inclusive culture that actively encourages people to express their unique perspectives—that is, an organization where “diversity of thought” consistently sparks innovation—is far more challenging. To understand the enablers and barriers to leveraging inclusion to capture new ideas, The Conference Board conducted a global survey of leaders responsible for either innovation or diversity and inclusion (D&I).

How can talent and learning professionals use inclusion to fuel innovation?

Innovation is a challenge.

Can diversity and inclusion make it easier?

New research indicates there is a direct correlation between innovation and inclusion, and that diversity of thought plays a key role in helping companies innovate. Chief human resources officers are at the nexus of inclusion and innovation, and should therefore take specific actions to create an inclusive culture that leads to greater diversity of thought.

A company’s ability to innovate can be the difference between mere survival and success. However, most organizations only have pockets of innovation. They can become more innovative by creating an inclusive culture.
