Can you explain your current role and what you enjoy, and least enjoy, about it?
This is a great way to settle down the candidate and starts to tell me their preferences and what motivates them, says Karen Finn, HR Director at Wolseley UK.
“The value a recruitment professional adds to a selection process is in delivering an assessment of a candidate’s motivations, decision-making style, leadership qualities and personality,” says Malcolm Kemp, Talent Acquisition Director at Klarna. However, this isn’t easy.
In order to assess a candidate’s softer skills, and not those that are necessarily accompanied by qualifications, it comes down to asking the right questions during the interview process.
The first step, according to John Hackston, Head of Research & Development at OPP, “is to really be sure that you know what you are looking for. And don’t assume that the person who will do well in this job is going to be someone who is like you, or even necessarily someone who you like.”
